FEBRUARY 2020: SCULPTURE PROJECT, NEACO – SPROWSTON COMMUNITY ACADEMY, NORWICH, NORFOLK

FEBRUARY 2020: SCULPTURE PROJECT, NEACO – SPROWSTON COMMUNITY ACADEMY, NORWICH, NORFOLK

I worked with a group of GCSE and A Level students during a 2 day project at Sprowston Community Academy. The project was led as part of Neaco’s outreach arts programme

Through drawing and experimenting, the group developed an environmental theme to respond to in 3D. They accomplished a series of profound and thoughtful sculptures in a range of techniques, including using found and recycled materials. The programme began within the on-site Papillon Project allotment gardens as a source of initial inspiration for experimental drawing and finding materials

I was so impressed by their motivation, creativity and effort. Their work will be displayed at part of the Sprowston Art Trail in February 2020

NOVEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020: NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY ‘COMING HOME’ – NORFOLK MUSEUMS SERVICE

NOVEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020: NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY ‘COMING HOME’ – NORFOLK MUSEUMS SERVICE

I have been commissioned to lead workshops with young people from Norwich International Youth Project (NIYP) for Norfolk Museums Service in autumn/winter 2019/2020. The sessions are part of the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Coming Home’ project which sees the Gallery sending portraits of iconic individuals to places they are closely associated with. This country-wide initiative will enable fifty portraits from the national Collection to travel to towns and cities across the UK, providing venues and communities with the opportunity to celebrate their local heroes.

In the project with Norfolk Museums Service, we’ll be taking inspiration from the 1800 portrait of Lord Horatio Nelson by Sir William Beechey. Through this portrait, we’ll explore identity, self, expression and the notion of portraits through hands-on creative workshops. In session one, we’ll use portrait photography with projected drawings and messages, and in session two, hand-sewing and applique to create symbolic textile portraits.

NOVEMBER 2019-JANUARY 2020: AFTER-SCHOOL ART CLUB, CULTURE SCHOOLS – ST GEORGE’S PRIMARY SCHOOL, GREAT YARMOUTH, NORFOLK

I am leading ‘masterclass’ workshops at a new after-school arts club for pupils at St George’s Primary School in Great Yarmouth. The term will be split into 2 mini-projects, and I will lead the first session to introduce a topic or technique, with the teaching staff leading the following sessions to develop approaches to using visual arts. We will explore playful drawing techniques, colourful still-life collage, and weaving and sculptural installation.

This project is part of Making Waves Together Culture Schools programme. They are a cultural partnership project linking Great Yarmouth, Norfolk and Lowestoft, Suffolk through their shared culture, heritage and assets. It’s made possible through the Great Place Scheme, delivered by Arts Council England, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic England.
